The conference explores how international investment law and dispute resolution practice approach environmental concerns. The demands for establishing effective protection of environmental common goods have become particularly pressing in the context of international efforts aimed at counteracting the damaging consequences of climate change.
International investment relations are largely driven by private actors and cross-border capital movements. However, investment law also incorporates substantive and procedural safeguards of public interest, which may be used for the purposes of addressing environmental issues arising in connection with investment relations.
The conference will provide a systematic examination of cross-sections between international investment law and environmental protection, including procedural, substantive and institutional aspects of the topic. It will also explore the potential for future reforms and developments of regulatory policies.
